چکیده

We present high-quality J, H and Ks photometry of four Small Magellanic Cloud stellar clusters with intermediate ages in the 1–7 Gyr range (namely NGC 339, 361, 416 and 419) . We obtained deep Color-Magnitude Diagrams to study the evolved sequences and providing a detailed census of the Red Giant Branch (RGB), Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) and Carbon star populations in each cluster and their contribution to the total cluster light. We find that in the ∼5-7 Gyr old clusters AGB stars account for ∼6% of the total light in Ks-band, Carbon stars are lacking and RGB stars account for ∼45% of the total bolometric luminosity. These empirical findings are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. Finally, we derived photometric metallicities computed by using the properties of the RGB and finding an iron content of [Fe/H]= -1.18, -1.08, -0.99 and -0.96 dex for NGC 339, 361, 416 and 419 respectively.

The Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey: the Small Magellanic Cloud Stellar Catalog and Extinction Map

We present our catalog of U , B, V , and I stellar photometry of the central 18 sq.◦ area of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We combine our data with the 2MASS and DENIS catalogs to provide, when available, U through KS data for stars. Internal and external astrometric and photometric tests using existing optical photometry (U , B, and V from Massey’s bright star catalog; B, V , and I from the micr...

The Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey: the Large Magellanic Cloud Stellar Catalog and Extinction Map

We present our catalog of U , B, V , and I stellar photometry of the central 64 deg area of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Internal and external astrometric and photometric tests using existing optical photometry (U , B, and V from Massey’s bright star catalog and I from the near-infrared sky survey DENIS) are used to confirm our observational uncertainty estimates. We fit stellar atmosphere model...

Joint Analysis of Near-infrared Properties and Surface Brightness Fluctuations of Lmc Star Clusters

Surface brightness fluctuations have been proved to be a very powerful technique to determine the distance and characterize the stellar content in extragalactic systems. Nevertheless, before facing the problem of stellar content in distant galaxies, we need to calibrate the method onto nearby well-known systems. In this paper we analyze the properties at J and Ks bands of a sample of 19 star cl...

Probing the RGB-phase transition: Near–IR photometry of six intermediate age LMC clusters

This is the first of a series of papers devoted to a global study of the photometric properties of the red stellar sequences in a complete sample of the Large Magellanic Cloud clusters, by means of near infrared array photometry. Deep J,H,Ks photometry and accurate Color Magnitude Diagrams down to K ≈ 18.5, Based on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile, u...

Near-infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy of IRAS sources in the Small Magellanic Cloud

Near-infrared photometry is obtained of 30 IRAS sources in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud selected to be possible AGB stars. Low resolution 4000 to 10 000 Å spectroscopy is presented for 10 of them, plus two AGB stars in the LMC. Improved IRAS fluxes are obtained using the gipsy package. Based on the optical spectra and analyses of colour-colour diagrams 9 are confirmed or likely c...
